Auxiliary Bishop's shock as a child when seeing Communion given in the hand

and how the Holy Spirit guided the Church to the practice of Communion on the tongue.

  1. In Hardy's 'Jude the Obscure' Jude overhears two Oxford clerics arguing heatedly about eastward vs. westward position. His comment is, 'Good God - the eastward position and all creation groaning!' To be as concerned about ritual gestures as this bishop and his mother are seems somewhat out of proportion. Why cannot they accept that many of their co-religionists now prefer to receive communion in the hand and do so with perfect reverence? God's prophets have been telling us for at least 3,000 years that God does not look on the outward observance. It's high time we got the message.
